Free Pattern: Newborn Sock Monkey Hat

crochet sock monkey hat

I am sooo in love with this sock monkey hat that I whipped up the other day!  I made it in a newborn size so that’s what this pattern is for. However, if you wanted to make it larger, you can check out how to design your own hat which should help! Basically, you”ll just be adding more rows in which you increase the number of double crochet stitches. If you’re making a hat and don’t have the person you’re making it for handy, or it’s a gift and you don’t want them to know, you can check out this size chart for a great reference to all ages and sizes!

Supplies:

  • I used Caron Simply Soft yarns which are carried in my local grocery store. The colors used in this were Autumn Red, Off White, and Silver Sparkle. The grey does have a shimmery look to it which I loved, but you could use the plain grey too!
  • I used a size 5mm H/8 hook since I seem to crochet tight
  • Tapestry needle for attaching the ears and mouth

Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Sc – single crochet
Sl st – slip stitch

Instructions for the hat:

Round 1: With Autumn Red,  Magic ring, ch 2, (if your chain is tight, you can ch 3 instead) 11 dc inside ring. Pull ring tight. Join to the top of ch 2. (11 dc plus your ch will make 12 stitches)

Round2: ch 2, 2 dc in each dc (24dc). Join to the top of ch 2

Round3: ch 2, *2 dc in first dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around (36dc) Join to top of ch 2

(This is the last row for increases on the newborn size hat. If you were to make this larger, you would want to continue your increases on Round4+)

Round4: With Off White, join color and leave tail to weave in, ch 2, dc in each dc around (36 dc) (if you crochet tight, you might throw in a few increases in this round as well)

Round5-9: With Silver Sparkle, join color and leave tail to weave in, Ch 2, dc in each dc around (36 dc)  Join to the top ch of ch 2.
At the end of round 9, finish off and leave a tail to weave in.

Round10: With Off White, join color and leave tail to weave in , sc in each dc around (36 sc)

Round11: With Autum Red, join color and leave tail to weave in, Crab stitch in each sc around (36 crab stitch)

Ears: Make 2

Round1: With Autumn Red, ch 6, dc in back loop of the 3rd stitch from hook, dc in next 3 loops (4 dc and the ch 2 from the chain) tie off and leave tail to weave in.

Round2: With Silver Sparkle, join color and leave tail to weave in, ch 2, dc in same stitch, *dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc* (8 dc) tie off and leave tail to weave in.

Mouth:

Round1: With Autumn Red, ch 13, sc in back of second loop from hook, sc in each back loop around. When you get to your last loop of the beginning of your chain, ch 4 in that loop and turn so that you are know sc on top of your chain. Sc around until you get to the end and sc 3, sl st in top of sc. Tie off and leave small tail.

Round2: With Off White, join color where you left off with the red. Ch 1 and sc in each sc around.

Attach ears and mouth with tapestry needle.

For the eyes, I just used some black yarn and made a crisscross shape until I liked them.
